Musculoskeletal & pain

Lower back pain

I treat back pain that improved with physical therapy and then stalled. Physician guidelines list acupuncture among the first treatments to try.

Neck pain

I treat a stiff neck and the knot between your shoulder blades together. In a year-long trial, the benefit held.

Shoulder pain

I treat shoulders that pinch when you reach overhead or wake you at night. Treatment works on the rotator cuff and the muscles around the shoulder blade.

Tennis & golfer’s elbow

I treat tennis and golfer’s elbow, the pain that flares when you grip or lift. I work on the tendon and the forearm muscles pulling on it.

I treat knee arthritis and the muscles that tighten to protect the joint. Rheumatology guidelines include acupuncture as an option.

Sciatica sends pain from the lower back down the leg. In a 2024 trial, acupuncture relieved sciatic leg pain about twice as much as sham acupuncture.

Neurological & headache

Migraine

I treat migraine as prevention. The aim is fewer, milder attacks, so your medication has less to do.

Headaches

Most headaches that aren’t migraine start in the muscles of the neck, shoulders and jaw. I find the points that reproduce your headache and treat it from there.

I treat numbness, tingling, and burning in the feet or hands, most often after diabetes or chemotherapy.

During & after cancer treatment

I treat side effects of cancer treatment, including joint pain, neuropathy, hot flashes, and fatigue. Oncology guidelines recommend acupuncture for aromatase-inhibitor joint pain.

Digestive

Digestive problems

I treat IBS, bloating, constipation, and reflux when the tests are normal and the symptoms continue. Several large trials support acupuncture for these problems.

Mental health & sleep

Anxiety & depression

Anxiety and low mood often share a cause: a nervous system that has been under strain for a long time. Acupuncture works on that physical state, alongside therapy and medication.

Insomnia

I treat insomnia, whether you can’t fall asleep or you wake at three and can’t get back down.

Also treated

Other things I treat regularly.

I also treat sports and repetitive-strain injuries, jaw and facial pain, menstrual pain and irregular cycles, and fatigue that hasn’t resolved on its own. Complex cases involving several systems at once are a regular part of the practice as well, often in patients who have already had a thorough medical workup and want a different approach.

Many cases fall between these categories, which is why I take a full history before deciding anything.
